12seconds for Peace - Figen Bico

The ethereal and visually delicious look of Figen Bico's contribution to 12seconds for Peace takes nothing away from the message for peace that she imparts here. Simply through living a life of peace, in actions, words and thoughts, others become attracted by the feelings and energy of peace that is given off and start to live their own lives in a more peaceful manner.

By changing ourselves, we start to change the world. Peace begins within the individual. In fact it is really the only place that it can ever exist.

Thank you for your wonderful video Figen!

If you also wish to contribute to 12seconds for Peace, please email your 12 second long video on the theme of peace to: 12seconds4peace@gmail.com

12seconds for Peace - Wadum Bashir

Today's video is a very important one from Wadum Bashir of Khartoum in Sudan. Bashir is a follower and spiritual son of Islam's Gandhi: the sufi mystic; Mahmoud Mohamed Taha.

Executed in January 1985 for crimes against Islam, Mahmoud Mohamed Taha was without a doubt, possibly one of Islam's leading modern heroes. Like his Indian near-contemporary, Mahatma Gandhi, Mahmoud Taha was a key figure in the fight for the independence of his homeland from British-Egyptian rule.

It is thus with great pleasure that we bring you a video of Wadum Bashir putting forward the ideas of his teacher for a world based on peace and justice.

If you wish to find out more about the history and teachings of Ustaz Mahmoud, you can find a great deal of information on the The Republican's website here: The Republican Thought.

12seconds for Peace - Joseph Batali Elia

One of the countries in the world where peace is often seen as a distant dream is Sudan. Straddling the divide between the Arab north and the African south of this great continent, Sudan and its people are struggling to find their place in the world. Yet the wonderful people of Sudan are just as resolute and determined in their desire for peace as anyone else.

It is with great pleasure that we bring you the first contribution to 12seconds for Peace, not only from Sudan, but from the African continent, in the form of a heart felt statement for peace from Joseph Batali Elia. Joseph is currently living in Khartoum, but will soon be returning to southern Sudan to set up a school for children that would otherwise have little access to education.

12seconds for Peace - Dikshen

Today's contribution to 12seconds for Peace is one that we are extremely happy to receive. It was sent in to us by Keith Martin, who is the founder of 'Dikshen'. Dikshen are a clothing outlet dedicated to serving the needs of underserved children around the world. From the Dikshen blurb:

"Through books and the power of story, our mission is to facilitate a command of language, build confidence and critical thinking skills, create pathways of opportunity, and ultimately empower underserved children through literacy."

If we want to build peace in the world, then there must clearly be a strong focus on empowering children and enabling them to grow into adults capable of making a positive contribution to the societies in which they live. Dikshen are doing a wonderful job and showing the way forward for compassion-lead business.

You can find the Dikshen website here: Dikshen.

12seconds for Peace - Giedre Aleksandravičiūtė

In 2008, at the request of the Lithuanian Sai Baba organisation, a celebration took place across major Lithuanian towns and cities that had participants observing five minutes silence for world peace. In Kaunas, Vilnius, Klaipeda, Panevezys, Siauliai and other places, people dressed in white congregated in the main squares and sat in prayer and meditation and sent out their desire and request for peace in the world.

In Kaunas - the former capital of Lithuania, now a beautiful town that attracts many tourists each year, Giedre Aleksandravičiūtė and her friends gathered as a part of this day of celebration and prayer. Giedre is a kite-maker and she and her friends, in an act reminsicent of Tibetan Buddhist practices, flew kites to which they had attached their dreams and wishes for peace in the world.

The video that Giedre has submitted to 12seconds for Peace contains some of the photos of that event in Kaunas back in 2008. Thank you so much for this beautiful video Giedre! You can find out more about Giedre's work as a kite-maker on her website at: www.aitvarai.lt

The soundtrack to this video, made with Tibetan bells, is taken from a recording by 'Sounds from Source'. Sounds form Source, contacted 12seconds for Peace sometime ago to donate an audio recording to the project for the use of anyone who wanted it for their video. There are many beautiful audio recordings available on the Sounds from Source website, so if you are stuck with knowing what to put on the soundtrack of your 12seconds for Peace video, then you could do no better than to check out their website here: www.soundsfromsource.com You will also find them in the sidebar here under 'Useful Resources'.

Thank you to everyone at Sounds from Source for your wonderful contribution to this video!

12seconds for Peace - Roni Lipstein

Today's video on 12seconds for Peace is from Roni Lipstein. Roni's message of peace - echoed by so many over the months on 12seconds for Peace - is that peace in the external world, does indeed start within. If we want to end war, end confllict, end violence against others, then collectively, we must develop a peaceful state of being. Time to begin.

12seconds for Peace - Anne Frank

It has been some time since we presented one of our videos in the 'Leaders & Teachers for Peace' series, and what better subject for the series as we approach Peace Day, than the words of Anne Frank.

Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929, but by 1933 had fled with her family to The Netherlands to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews. In 1942 she began to keep a diary that documented her experiences during the, by then German occupation of the Netherlands. Although Anne died a victim of the Nazi persecutions in Belsen concentration camp in 1945, her diary lived on. Thanks to the hard work of her father Otto, who survived the war and discovered her diary when he returned to The Netherlands, it saw publication in 1947. 'The Diary of Anne Frank' has become one of the worlds most widely read books and has been translated into many languages.

Who better to appreciate the value of peace and the need for love in the world than someone who has lived - and died -  through a time when terror and evil have dominated the world.

12seconds for Peace - World Peace Day!

The 21st September marks the United Nations International Day of Peace. 'Peace Day' as it has come to be known was first recognised in 1982, following a resolution to the UN General Assembly, sponsored by both the United Kingdom and Costa Rica.

Originally taking place on the third Tuesday of September each year, in 2001, following a further resolution to the UN General Assembly, again sponsored by the United Kingdom and Costa Rica, the day was fixed on the 21st September. The significance of this day from 2001 onwards was enlarged considerably due to the relentless work of the English documentary film maker, Jeremy Gilley, who pressed the United Nations to declare that the International Day of Peace would be marked as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence.

Peace Day is growing in importance each year as more and more people are not only becoming aware of its existence, but are actively wishing to support and promote its ideals. The establishing of a global day of peace and non-violence is possibly one of the most significant events in the history of human-kind. It is an event of profound importance to us all.

12seconds for Peace, in supporting the concept and ideals of Peace Day, is asking everyone to make a stand for peace. 12seconds for Peace is asking you to contribute your 12seconds for Peace video now. If you have thought about contributing in the past and somehow just never got around to it, or promised a video and then simply did not have the time, then now is the time to make a difference. Now is the time - just 12 seconds to make a difference and tell the world that you too want peace.

You can shoot your video via webcam right on this blog via the TokBox screen at the top right. Just record and hit send. It's that simple. Or if you fancy doing something a little more creative, then please feel free and email your video to 12seconds4peace@gmail.com

This is your chance to make a difference. Your chance to stand for peace. Don't let the lack of time stand in your way. It only takes 12seconds...

As we move towards Peace Day, it is somehow appropriate that today's video, again courtesy of the commitment and enthusiasm of Todd and Gina at Murdock's Trinity Records in Arizona, presents the messages of peace of three young boys. The youth of the world are the one's that will inherit whatever we decide to leave for them. Let it be peace.

If you are in Arizona and want to get on board with 12seconds for Peace, why not contact Todd and Gina at Murdock's Trinity Records. I am sure they would love to hear from you and are very willing to talk to you and help you with your own 12seconds for Peace video. You can find their Facebook page here.
